Gestational Diabetes

Most people know already, but Wednesday I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I took my glucose test last week and failed it so Wednesday morning I went to the lab to do the more extensive 3 hour glucose test. I drank the extra sugary drink and about 30 minutes later threw it up in the lobby in front of the lab-good times!
So my doctor decided that I have GD and sent me to a dietitian. I went yesterday and got a meter and have to test my blood 4 times a day and I got a diet plan. I am pretty confused about the diet part! I have to balance my carbs and proteins so meal and snack planning is going to take ALOT of work.
I am probably just being a wimp or baby about this, but I'm not happy that I'm dealing with this. It has been emotionally hard for me and is going to take getting used to. I understand that it will most likely go away when Conner is born so I only have about 10 weeks of doing this, but it still sucks. I just have to keep reminding myself that this is not about me, this is for my child!

oh man! That is no fun at all. I had to do the 3 hour glucose test too. It ended up being more like 5 hours. no fun! I didn't end up having it, but I understand the stress of just thinking I did. So I can only imagine. But every case that I heard of it only lasted through the pregnancy. So I'm sure you'll be fine. And it will all be worth it when you have him in your arms and you know you did everything you could to keep him healthy. :) Good Luck.

hi, i'm a friend of kelly's and i occasionally look at you blog. i hope it's okay that i'm commenting.
this is a total blessing that you were able to find out that your baby does have gestational diabetes and that you can take care of it now. My son was 9.12 at birth and had to stay in the NICU for several days after birth because his body was unable to keep his blood sugar levels up. i was not diagnosed with GD but the doctors have theories that he may have developed it later on after the test. be grateful that you have help and direction to get yourself eating healthy and give your baby a good start. good luck.
